Oral Surgery

Gum surgery.

Gum surgery may be needed in conjunction with another procedure, or may be used on its own to correct a problem and improve the patient's appearance.

There are two primary procedures for cosmetic gum surgery, depending on your current smile: "Gummy Smile" (Excessive Gingival Display) and "Long Tooth Smile" (Gum Recession).

A "Gummy Smile" can occur due to wear of teeth from teeth grinding, a short upper lip, or having a longer than usual upper jawbone. This smile is when your teeth appear too small and your gums appear too large.

As your gums recede, your teeth appear longer than normal. While "long teeth" may result in an unattractive smile, you should also be concerned with root sensitivity and possible tooth loss.

Recent advances in techniques and materials have resulted in significant improvements in both comfort, predictability and esthetics.

Extraction of wisdom teeth.

The extraction of wisdom teeth is necessary when they are prevented from properly erupting within the mouth. They may grow sideways, partially emerge from the gum, and even remain trapped beneath the gum and bone. Impacted teeth can take many positions in the bone as they attempt to find a pathway that will allow them to erupt successfully.

Extraction of wisdom teeth is generally recommended when:
  • Wisdom teeth only partially erupt. This leaves an opening for bacteria to enter around the tooth and cause an infection. Pain, swelling, jaw stiffness and general illness can result.
  • There is a chance that poorly aligned wisdom teeth will damage adjacent teeth.
  • A cyst (fluid-filled sac) forms, destroying surrounding structures such as bone or tooth roots.

Corrective jaw surgery.

Quality Dental, P.C. works to give patients who have difficulty chewing and speaking properly, develop jaw joint problems and have teeth which are not properly aligned, the best possible results. Corrective jaw surgery improves function and provides an improved facial balance and appearance.

Following are some of the conditions that may indicate the need for corrective jaw surgery:
  • Difficulty chewing, or biting food.
  • Difficulty swallowing.
  • Chronic jaw or jaw joint (TMJ) pain and headache.
  • Excessive wear of the teeth.
  • Space between the upper and lower teeth when the mouth is closed.
  • Facial injury or birth defects.
  • Receding chin.
  • Protruding jaw.
  • Inability to make the lips meet without straining.
  • Chronic mouth breathing and dry mouth.
  • Breathing problems when sleeping, including snoring.

Sinus lift surgery.

A sinus lift is surgery that adds bone to your upper jaw in the area of your molars and premolars. It's sometimes called a sinus augmentation. The bone is added between your jaw and the maxillary sinuses, which are on either side of your nose. To make room for the bone, the sinus membrane has to be moved upward, or "lifted."

A sinus lift may be an appropriate oral surgery option for a patient who is:
  • Missing more than one tooth in the posterior maxilla.
  • Missing a large amount of bone in the posterior maxilla.
  • Missing teeth due a congenital (present at birth) defect or condition.
  • Missing most of the maxillary teeth and need firm anchorage for multiple implants.
